When a person deprives from food, water, sex, and desires of other kinds that person is effectively cleansing his mind, body, and soul, he gains control of his heart over his physical and spiritual desires.

Giving up food and water for a while is a natural way of throwing out the toxins from the body. Controlling our thoughts and actions helps develop inner strength and will-power, this is considered the first step of reaching closure to the all mighty god.
Fasting is followed in almost all faith around the world, all the teachers and religious lecturer promote fasting for self-discipline and

Lent for the Jews, Ramadan for the Muslims, Navaratri fasting / Tuesday or Thursday fasting for Hanuman, etc Buddhism and Jainism all of them include the concept of Fasting Intermittently.

In Hindi, the fasting is called as "Upavas", this Upavas, could be of any kind, like sacrificing Rice, Roti, Tea, Coffee, etc, some people also keep "Mon Vrat" for a single day, means no verbal communication for 24 hrs. In short "Upavas" means giving up your favorite staff or anything you like.
.
As per Jainism if you take upvas then you should be empty stomach without having water and food for 24 hours, Jainism promotes regular fasting alongside meditation to not only detoxify your mind but also your body.

In Hindus, Shravan month is consider the most auspicious month, it is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the majority of Hindus keep fast in Shravan month. Few Hindus, do not cut their hair, do not save their beard, few avoid wearing footwear, etc, all this is a kind of Upasav in the name of God.

Fasting is a protection and a shield for a believer against further troubles and future sins. This is a learning period, to gain control over your own senses and abilities. When a person is fasting he gains control of his heart over his physical and spiritual desires. Refraining from food and water reminds him to refrain from acts like lying, backbiting, gossiping, arguing, etc.

There could be multiple reasons for one to fast, however after reading multiple articles I found very interesting Two reasons for which our great ancestors introduce fast.

 1) Limited Resources -  In this huge world the resources bestowed upon us by this lovely nature are limited, if we all become selfish and consume it daily they will become abandoned. So our great ancestors knew that human nature includes - selfishness, fear, sacrifice, love, care, etc. They understood that human at times becomes selfish and will consume everything for their selfish interests and nothing will be left for the future.
So to form such a sustainable balance in nature they created rules. Now rules will be followed only when there is either penalty or some benefit. This was the reason the concept of Paap and Punya ( evil and good ) was introduced. You will get Punya if you do fast.
The technical reason is, that in earlier days when agricultural land was limited and if just one day in a week each and every human sacrifices food ( agricultural produce ) there will be a great economic balance.
But unfortunately as time passed things were understood in the wrong ways, Fasting means sacrificing food. Your sacrifice of a daily meal will give another person a meal. Everyone cannot come to your doorstep to ask. So fasting is not a bad way to help others if followed accurately.
And every machine needs rest from working continuously. Our body too needs rest and recovery time to work longer and function properly.

2) Toxic in the body - The major benefit of fasting from a scientific prerogative is that it leads to the restoration of hormonal imbalances in the body.
Fasting improves blood flow or circulation and the body's capacity to eliminate toxins, resulting in better overall health. One feels more energetic and alert and is more resistant to all forms of disease or illness. It even slows down the aging process, which is a little more due to the accumulated effects of our bad habits or wrong ways of living. A day of fasting teaches one, self-control, and discipline. It greatly helps to break those addictions that are destroying us and helps us start to acquire new and positive habits.
