Should Child Sleep With Parents



Parenthood is a great blessing but it needs a lot of energy. Sleep makes a huge difference not only to our body, but also the quality time that we spend with our kids. If we are exhausted or sleep deprived, our patience levels are low and there is a higher tendency to get irritated and not enjoy raising the kids. In some cases, less sleep can lead to serious medical problems.

Should you allow your child to sleep alone?

Try asking this question to your child and see their responses. In most of the situations, it so happens that they would like to sleep only with the parents.

Research shows the ideal situation is where parents and kids are sleeping in their own rooms. That would foster independence in a child and give enough privacy and quality time to parents; to spend with each other as a couple. But there are instances where the child is afraid to be alone, has nightmares, or just keeps waking up at night, sneaking into parents bed. This can be very exhausting.


In India at least 95% of the children are sleeping in the same bed with their parents until they are 3 or 4 years old. The only exemption will be if there is a younger child came into the family. But still the parents will allow the elder one to sleep on their bed and later take them to another bed. It helps the children to have a better attachment to their parents.


Children who sleep separately with their parents find it scary to sleep alone, they wake up many times with fear or loneliness in the room, but the children who share beds with their parents take proper and peaceful sleep, the reason is that they feel physiologically safer.



I found an article that lists how some advantages of co-sleeping and tips as well to do it right. Here's an excerpt from it...
"Co-sleeping is a practice which is often debated in the West, but if done right, can actually be quite beneficial for the child. Many experts are of the opinion that co-sleeping helps to build a stronger bond between parents and babies. In his book, Good Nights: The Happy Parents' Guide to the Family Bed, Dr. Jay Gordon, states that children who sleep with their parents become independent faster because they do not experience separation anxiety. "When a child routinely goes to sleep in the presence of an adult, or with an adult, they are unlikely to take up thumb-sucking or get attached to security objects," he explains."


They sleep well when they feel secure. Knowing mom is close will likely help baby sleep better and fuss or cry less in nights.

Children who sleep next to parents, find with more stable temperatures, regular heartbeats, and proper breathing compared to kids who sleep alone.



Sleeping together as a family develops strong bonding among the child as well as with both the parents, because it’s only during night time the child can share stories and the parents can engage in true conversations and true love and bonding develops.


Most of the child has the habit of passing urine onto their pants till late age ( in some situations) and parents close to the child can help replace the clothes for the child ( and acts as a means to prevent infection spreading for the child)

Most of the child has the habit of putting their thumb on to their mouth till late age and the presence of parents next to them can help prevent this ( or at least take the thumb out of their mouth)

“Challenges”

The only challenge I can think of is the sensual pleasures between the couple is lost, but can still be enjoyed by observing deep sleep parameters of the child and in most cases where the couples are living with their parents, this issue gets solved as the after the child spends time with the parents it gets to sleep with his and/her grandparents.

The story of Narasimha is one of Vishnu’s ten avatars taken to restore Dharma and righteousness in the world. The story revolves around Hiranyakashyapu and his son, "Prahlada".
Lord Narasimha is the most intense and Fourth Incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Once during the Satya Yuga, there was a demon king named Hiranyakasipu, whose younger brother Hiranyaksa was killed by Vishnu’s other avatar Varaha, because his brother (Hiranyaksa) had started to disturb mankind and other demigods, hence he started to despise Vishnu and wanted to avenge him. He knew to avenge him would not be a piece of cake; hence he undertook a tough penance and worshipped Lord Brahma until impressed by his devotion he was willing to grant him the boon of his choice.

While Hiranyakashyapu was in meditation, Indra, King of God's attacked Hirankashyapu’s kingdom and was massacring subjects. Indra almost killed Kayadhu, Hiranyakashyapu’s wife but Narada intervened and took Kayadhu to his Ashram. At the time, Kayadhu was pregnant with a child.

When Brahma appeared before Hiranyakashyapu, he asked for immortality, he was refused for every being had to die. So, Hiranyakashyapu chose the following conditions for his death:
1.      He cannot be killed in the sky, on earth, or in water.
2.      He cannot be killed inside a house or outside of a house.
3.      He cannot be killed by man, Deva, animal, or Asura.
4.      Hiranyakashyapu cannot be killed during the daytime or nighttime.
5.      Hiranyakashyapu could not be killed by any sort of celestial or divine weapons.

 As time passed, he grew proud of his powers and prohibited the worship of Vishnu or any other lord in his kingdom, Hiranyakashyapu ordered to stop prayers of Devas and had people worship him, meanwhile his wife Kayadhu gave birth to a baby boy, His name was kept "Prahlada". Hiranyakashyapu loved Prahlada very much and loved to be with the child.
Prahlada was a keen and sincere devotee of Lord Vishnu, The bhakti of Prahlada was true and selfless. He submitted his body, soul, and mind to the Lord. Even after his father’s numerous attempts to forbid him from worshipping Vishnu, his dedication towards his Lord never dwindled.
When it came to the boy's education, the King sent the child to the Ashram of the Royal Sage to learn scriptures etc. and also learn his father's greatness. But the child had eyes for Vishnu alone. While at the Ashram, Prahlada converted all the other students to worship Vishnu rather than Hiranyakashyapu.

The teachers got afraid and told this to the King. Hiranyakashyapu called Prahlada to him. When Hiranyakashyapu asked Prahlada to praise him, Prahlada praised Vishnu. The king’s pride and aversion for Vishnu grew so much that he couldn’t bear the sight of his son who believed Vishnu to be present in every nook and corner of the world.  
Hiranyakashyapu understood that the boy was a strong devotee of his enemy. Hiranyakashyapu was angry at the child and subjected him to many kinds of torture and punishments. Some of them are:
·         Had Prahlada stuck neck-deep in mud and had elephants trample his head
·         Threw the boy off a cliff
·         Threw the child in a cell with snakes and scorpions
·         Tried to burn the child using his sister, Holika.
In the burning incident, Holika, despite having a boon of not being hurt by fire, was burned to death while the child escaped each torture unharmed for Vishnu kept protecting the child.

He made several attempts to get his son killed but every time he came out safe and untouched, with every attempted to kill Prahlada, his belief in lord increases.
Hiranyakashyapu was frustrated. One day, Hiranyakashyapu called Prahlada and asked him where Vishnu was. Prahlada spoke to his father that Vishnu is omnipotent and omnipresent and can be found everywhere. Hiranyakashyapu pointed to a pillar and asked “in there too?” Prahlada nodded yes.

Hirankashyapu took his mace and struck the pillar. From the pillar came a terrifying roar. A man with the face of a lion came out, angry and blood lusted, with the aim of killing Hiranyakashyapu.
Vishnu had understood the demon's power, then creatively adapts into a mixed avatar that is neither man nor animal too kills the demon at the junction of day and night, inside and outside.
This avatar of Lord Vishnu is called "Narasimha". he held the king in his lap, which was neither sky nor ground, in the evening i.e. neither day nor night, with his nails which are not a weapon, between the door that is neither inside nor outside and tore away his body and freed him of his evil ways. This way Lord Vishnu took various avatars protected mankind from evil.

What is Meditation?

"Meditation is a process of finding inner peace"

Meditation is a powerful yet effortless technique that allows the conscious mind to experience the silent depths of its own nature
Meditation is an exercise to connect with self. Meditation is not any act however it is a state of mind where there are no thoughts and the mind is completely still and hence clear in perception.

Meditation simply means awareness, "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation. 
Who I am, what is the purpose of my life, why I am here, all this question can be answered through practicing meditation.

The word meditation is derived from two Latin words: meditari(to think, to dwell upon, to exercise the mind) and mederi (to heal). Its Sanskrit derivation 'medha' means wisdom.

Meditation cannot be done with a goal in mind, It is not an act or something we do for some time in a day. 
One needs to sit down with eyes closed and empty the mind to attain inner peace and relaxation.

Types of Meditation?

Our ancient Teachers have taught 112 way of meditation techniques, below are the two common use technique.

CONCENTRATION MEDITATION (Trataka or "RajYog Meditation) -This is a highly recommended technique of meditation, the method involves focusing on a single dot, staring at a candle flame, or a single image. Watch it for 10 minutes, ideally you should don't blink while watching the candle. It is hard to not blink- at first tears will start rolling down your cheeks if you try to keep your eyes open without blinking but with practice your eyes will become used to this practice.
You must not allow your mind to think about anything except that point. If you’re focusing on a flame, you must reflect on the appearance of the flame and be aware of it, and avoid any unnecessary thoughts. It is effective if a person does this ten minutes every day, but for better results, you must try to increase your concentration span periodically.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION (Close eye Meditation) - Just sit relaxed, closed your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing.  This method is for the abstract minded. Instead of an external source or word, simply watch the thoughts that pass through your head. The key is to not think too deeply about these thoughts or shift to memories. Do not judge these thoughts. Simply watch them. Having a detached view of your own thoughts is a remarkably effective way to develop self alertness.

Method of Meditation?

1) Sit down on a mattress in a comfortable posture, preferably cross-legged, but if not possible to sit on a ground u can sit in a normal chair but remember your spine neck and head should be in a straight line, remember our body energy lies in our spine neck.
2) Rest your hands in your lap if u are seated crossed legged or on chair
3) Relax your hand, entire body and breath slowly
4) Gently close your eye and observe the flow of breath moving In-Out.
5) You can also play a piece of light music, which will cool your mind

Different thought, pictures may come to your mind, but don't get distracted or react to it. Bring your concentration back to your breath.
I would suggest starting with CONCENTRATION MEDITATION (Trataka), Its effect is too fast and best for beginners.

When to practice Meditation?

Meditation can be practice anytime & anywhere. There is no time table. But it will be more effective if you practice it in the early morning because at that time the frequency of your thought is low. 

You can also do it before going to sleep it will lead your whole night into a MEDITATED sleep.
Early days you will find it as boring. But the day after at least 21 days you will find it very interesting and you will get the results also.
Do not try to stop your thought. Just have a watch on your breath. As your mind thought about another thing again have a watch on your breath. After some days there will be a state where your mind will not create any thought and you will be in a MEDITATED state. At that time you can visualize something that you want & definitely it will manifest. You can have an inner journey also.
